You did the right thing stopping and observing rather than just ignoring it. Quick question though - were there other cars on the road? Any witnesses would be valuable.

Have you watched the old Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) series? I know it's technically fiction but the tone is perfect - properly eerie without being melodramatic.
