Best paranormal documentaries/shows - not the American ones

I'm absolutely sick of American paranormal content. Every show is overproduced, there's always a jump scare, they get people shouting "WOAH, DID YOU HEAR THAT?" every thirty seconds. It's exhausting.

Looking for recommendations for decent British or European paranormal documentaries that actually have some gravitas. I loved the old BBC specials from the 80s and 90s, where they'd just... investigate something calmly with actual experts. Bonus points if it's available on streaming somewhere.

What's everyone been watching lately? Genuinely interested in thoughtful paranormal content, not entertainment stuff.

Have you watched the old Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) series? I know it's technically fiction but the tone is perfect - properly eerie without being melodramatic. For actual documentaries, the old BBC "Horizon" series from the 1970s-80s sometimes covered paranormal topics and they're absolutely brilliant. Dry, scientific, thoughtful.

Most Haunted is... well, it exists. Yvette Fielding screaming a lot. But if you want something actually good, search for "In Search of Monsters" - it's Swedish-made, beautifully shot, takes itself seriously without being pretentious. Deals with cryptids and historical mysteries across Europe. Proper investigating, not theatre.

The problem is that paranormal documentaries are inherently more interesting when they're dramatised. Pure investigation without any sensationalism is just... waiting for something to happen in a dark room for eight hours. Americans got that right at least - they understood the entertainment value.

If you're looking for genuinely thoughtful content, honestly, podcasts are better than documentaries these days. Stuff like "Our Fake History" or "The Cabinet of Curiosities" deal with paranormal and unexplained stuff with actual nuance. Documentaries are always chasing ratings.

The BBC's "Secret History" series sometimes covers paranormal topics and those are genuinely well-researched and presented without hysteria. Also "Fortean TV" did a few series in the 90s that are worth hunting down if you can find them. Much more measured approach.
