True Paranormal Encounters from UK Campers

We asked the Quirk Reports community to share their strangest experiences while camping in the UK. The response was overwhelming. These are some of the most compelling accounts, selected for consistency, detail, and credibility. Names have been changed at the witnesses' request.

"Something Was Circling Our Tent" — Peak District, 2021

Mark and Sarah were wild camping near Kinder Scout when they heard something large walking around their tent at approximately 1am. "It wasn't an animal — the footsteps were bipedal and heavy," Mark reported. "It circled the tent three times. We could see the fabric pressing inward as it brushed past. When I unzipped the door, there was nothing there. But the grass around the tent was flattened in a perfect circle."

"The Singing on the Loch" — Loch Lomond, 2020

Emma was solo camping on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond when she heard singing coming from the water at approximately 3am. "It was a woman's voice, singing in what sounded like Gaelic. Beautiful but incredibly sad. There were no boats on the loch — I checked with binoculars. The singing continued for about fifteen minutes, then just... stopped."

"It Stood at the Edge of the Trees" — New Forest, 2022

A group of four friends camping in the New Forest captured something on a trail camera that none of them can explain. "We set up the camera pointing at a clearing near our campsite. At 2:47am, it captured three frames of a tall, thin figure standing perfectly still at the tree line. It appears to be roughly seven feet tall. In the fourth frame, it is gone." The images remain unexplained.

"My Compass Went Haywire" — Bodmin Moor, 2019

James, an experienced hillwalker, was crossing Bodmin Moor when his compass began spinning wildly near the Hurlers stone circle. "I've been walking with a compass for thirty years — I have never seen anything like it. It spun for about two minutes, then settled pointing roughly southeast instead of north. It corrected itself about half a mile from the stones."

"We All Heard the Drums" — Brecon Beacons, 2023

A group of six investigators camping in the Brecon Beacons recorded what they describe as rhythmic drumming emanating from underground. "It started at midnight — a deep, resonant boom every three seconds. We could feel vibrations through the ground. Four of us recorded it on separate devices. The sound continued for forty-seven minutes, then stopped abruptly." Analysis of the recordings confirmed the sound was not consistent with any known geological phenomenon.
