Woke up to find my bedroom door open - no one in the house but me

Date: Monday, 25th November, approximately 2:30 AM
Location: My flat in Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Witnesses: Only myself (but my cat was definitely spooked)

I woke up suddenly - that kind of wake where you're instantly alert rather than gradually coming to consciousness. My bedroom door was wide open. I know for a fact I locked it before bed because I always do (bit paranoid about security, I'm on the ground floor).

I checked the rest of the flat immediately - all doors and windows still locked, nothing out of place. My cat was sitting on the kitchen counter (which she never does) looking genuinely frightened. I searched the entire flat - under beds, in cupboards, behind doors. Nothing. No one.

My lock isn't faulty - I've used it hundreds of times without issue. No signs of forced entry anywhere. I did check outside and there's no obvious way someone could've broken in and exited cleanly.

The thing that's weird is I have a vague memory of hearing something in my dream, but I can't remember what. And I feel like something was wrong when I woke up - not just the door, but the whole room felt different somehow.

Is this something people have experienced before? Am I having a breakdown or is there actually something weird going on?

Could be sleep paralysis or a partial waking dream where you're confused about what's real. Those feel absolutely vivid and terrifying in the moment, but there's usually a mundane explanation when you check things out properly. The cat being scared is probably just reacting to your anxiety. Animals pick up on stress.

Sleep-related issues aside, I'd actually get your lock checked by a professional locksmith. Ground-floor flats are targets and sometimes locks can be quietly compromised without obvious damage. Better to rule out the mundane explanation first before going into paranormal territory.

This bit interests me more than the door. That 'wrong' feeling is something a lot of people report before or during paranormal events. Could be psychological but also could be picking up on something. Have you had other experiences in the flat? Anything else feel off?

The vague dream memory + sudden waking + disorientation is basically textbook sleep paralysis or lucid dreaming bleedover. When that happens, your brain can create false memories about what happened. Doesn't mean you're having a breakdown - it's actually super common. I'd suggest keeping a sleep journal for a week and see if there's a pattern.
