Unexplained incident at my flat in Bethnal Green (East London) - still shaken

I'm writing this at 3am because I genuinely cannot sleep and I need to get this down while it's fresh. Bear with me because this is going to sound completely mad.

I live in a converted Victorian warehouse in E2, fairly typical for the area. Been here 14 months, no issues. Tonight around 11:15pm I was in my kitchen making tea when I heard what I can only describe as someone whispering my name. Not loudly, just... clearly saying 'Claire.' Three times.

The thing is, I live alone, I've got good locks, and both my flatmates were out. I checked literally everywhere - under beds, in cupboards, behind doors. Nothing. The heating pipes weren't making noise (I checked that possibility immediately). It was unmistakably a human voice, unmistakably saying my name.

The weird bit: My cat (normally ballsy) was absolutely terrified. Refused to leave my bedroom for the next hour. She's still jumpy as I write this.

I'm not usually superstitious but this has genuinely rattled me. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Should I be worried?

Right, first thing - don't panic. This happens more often than you'd think in old London buildings. Victorian warehouses especially are notorious for weird acoustics. Sound travels in unpredictable ways through those old pipes and cavities. That said, the cat reaction is interesting because they do pick up on things we don't.

Keep a record of it. Time, date, what you were doing, your emotional state. If it happens again, record it if you can. Might be nothing supernatural, might be something worth investigating further.

The East End has proper history, mate. Bethnal Green especially - post-industrial spaces like that often have residual... something. Could be acoustic phenomena, could be psychological, could be something else. The important thing is you felt genuinely threatened enough to check your flat thoroughly. That wasn't anxiety, that was legitimate concern. Trust your instincts.

Smart thinking. But also consider: mobile phones doing weird stuff, radio interference from external sources, neighbouring flats with thin walls. Victorian conversions are terrible for sound insulation. Could've been someone outside calling to a friend named Claire, sound travelling up through an external wall cavity?

That said, the cat thing is compelling. Cats aren't usually frightened by mundane explanations.

This is textbook hypnagogic experience, I reckon. That space between sleep and waking where your brain does weird things. The fact you were making tea suggests you might've been slightly tired? The mind's capable of generating incredibly vivid auditory hallucinations in that state. Not saying you're mad, just saying it's a known phenomenon.

Install a Ring doorbell or similar if you can. Get environmental readings (EMF, temperature) if this happens again. Document everything. Bethnal Green's got a complicated history - could be residual haunting, could be something else entirely. Either way, gathering data is the first step. Don't feel silly about it, just be methodical.
