Thermal imaging camera comparison: which model is actually worth the money?

Right, I'm looking to upgrade my paranormal investigation kit and I'm stuck between a few thermal imaging options. Budget is roughly £200-400.

I currently have a basic £50 thermal app for my phone (it's rubbish, don't bother), but I want something actually reliable. The problem is that thermal cameras range from "toy" quality at £80 to "professional" quality at £1,500+, and I'm trying to find the sweet spot.

I've been looking at:

FLIR ONE Pro (Gen 3) - About £280 on Amazon. Decent specs, attaches to iPhone. Good reviews from the paranormal community. Downside: only works with iPhones, so I'd need to upgrade my phone too.

Seek Thermal Pro - Around £200, works with Android or iPhone. Supposedly reliable for ghost hunting. Less enthusiastic reviews online but way more affordable.

Guide TrackIR Pro - About £320, decent reviews for paranormal work, specifically marketed at ghost hunters. Never seen one in person though.

Has anyone actually used any of these for serious investigation? What's your experience? Is the extra cost of the FLIR worth it, or am I just paying for the brand name?

I've got the FLIR One Pro and I genuinely think it's the best value in that price range. Yes, the iPhone requirement is annoying, but the image quality is noticeably better than the Seek equivalent. I've been using it for about eight months and it's picked up some genuinely interesting thermal anomalies that my other kit missed.

The Seek Thermal is actually pretty good for the price. I've used it on three investigations and it works fine. The image is slightly grainier than the FLIR but you're saving £80 and getting Android compatibility. If you're just starting out, honestly, don't overthink it. Save your money for EMF meters, which are way more useful for actual ghost detection.

In my opinion, yes. The refresh rate on the FLIR is noticeably faster, which matters if you're trying to capture quick thermal fluctuations. But that said, most paranormal thermal anomalies are slow-moving (cold spots that develop over time, that sort of thing), so the difference might not matter for your specific use case.

Don't bother with thermal imaging for ghost hunting, honestly. It's good for checking your house for insulation problems, but most "paranormal" thermal anomalies are just drafts, poor heating, reflections, or your own body heat. Spend the money on a decent EMF meter instead. Those are way more reliable for actual paranormal investigation.

I'd suggest renting one before buying. Some photography hire shops in major cities will rent thermal cameras for like £30-50 a day. Test it out on an actual investigation before dropping £300 on something you might not use regularly.

The Guide TrackIR Pro is actually brand new - it was released in September specifically for paranormal investigators. I haven't used it but the specs look solid and it's got a decent warranty. Might be worth waiting for more reviews from actual users before making a decision.
