The shadow figure in my Leeds flat - something actually happened last night

I need to write this down whilst it's fresh. I'm not usually one to post about personal experiences because I worry about sounding mad, but this community's always been respectful, so here goes.

Last night around 2:15am, I woke up suddenly - didn't have a nightmare or anything, just awake. Room was pitch black. I could see a figure standing at the foot of my bed, completely still. Not translucent or glowing or any of the stereotypical ghost stuff, but definitely a solid-looking human shape. It was wearing what looked like Victorian clothing, quite formal.

I absolutely froze. Couldn't move, couldn't shout. The figure just stood there, and I swear it was looking directly at me. This lasted maybe fifteen seconds, then it just stepped backwards into the wardrobe and vanished. Wardrobe door was closed, mind you. No creaking, nothing.

I turned the light on immediately, checked the entire flat, looked in the wardrobe - nothing. Windows locked, door locked. I was awake enough to check the time on my phone, so this wasn't some half-asleep hallucination. I'm still shaking a bit this morning, properly unsettled. Has anyone experienced something similar?

That sounds like sleep paralysis combined with a hypnagogic hallucination, I'm afraid. Very common, very convincing, but completely explainable by neuroscience. Your brain's wake-sleep cycle got out of sync and produced both the paralysis and the visual. The Victorian clothing is interesting though - brains often pull from historical imagery for these. How well did you sleep the night before?

I don't want to dismiss you, but I'd also consider other possibilities before jumping to paranormal. Have you been stressed? Worked late? Sleep deprivation can cause you to see things. Also, how old's your flat? Any history you know of?

Where in Leeds? Some parts of the city have interesting histories. I'd be curious to know if your flat has any previous documented paranormal activity or historical significance. Before you panic too much, it might be worth doing some research into the building itself.

This really does sound like textbook sleep paralysis. When that happens, your brain can generate hallucinations because it's trying to make sense of why you can't move. The figure at the foot of the bed is one of the most common manifestations. Not saying nothing happened, but there's a well-understood physiological explanation. Worth checking out if you've had it before?

Regardless of the cause, that's a genuinely frightening experience and I'm sorry you've had it. Whether it's paranormal or neurological doesn't really matter in terms of how you're feeling right now. Have you considered calling someone just to talk? Or maybe staying somewhere else tonight if you're really shaken?

I'd recommend getting your carbon monoxide detector checked. Seriously. Undetected CO poisoning can cause hallucinations, disorientation, and sleep disturbances. It's worth ruling out something that straightforward and potentially dangerous before exploring other explanations.
