Residual haunting makes sense if the footsteps follow the exact same path every time, but I'm curious about the "apparent intelligence" bit that got cut off in the classification. Does the ghost actually respond to people or change its behaviour at all? That's the bit that would really change things for me. If it just does the same loop regardless of who's watching, that's textbook residual. But if theres any interaction reported then it's something else entirely.

What I find interesting about cases like this is the floor level thing - old manor houses often had floors raised or lowered over the centuries, which is why you sometimes get reports of figures appearing to walk slightly below or above the current floor level. If the footsteps here are consistently at the same height regardless of which room they're tracked through, that would actually be really useful data for working out when in the building's history the "recording" was made, if that's the right word for it. Worth checking against old floor plans if any survive. Does the case file mention anything about the path relative to the current layout? I'm fairly new to all this but that kind of structural cross-referencing seems like it could narrow things down considerably.

The thing that always gets me with cases like this is the floor level question - if the ghost is walking at a different height to the current floor, that suggests the footsteps are basically a recording of the original building layout rather than an actual presence making choices. Can someone explain what's actually happening with the footsteps? Are they always on the same path, same time of night, or does it vary? Because that distinction matters quite a bit if you're trying to work out whether this is residual or something else entirely. Three hundred years is a long time but I've read about cases where the pattern shifts over decades and nobody bothers to document it properly so you end up with a muddled picture that's useless for analysis.
