This has been happening for about three weeks now, every night around 2-3am. I live on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors (near Hebden Bridge) and I keep hearing what sounds like singing or chanting coming from the direction of the moor. It's not quite human-sounding but definitely organized, rhythmic, almost musical.

Last night (18th) I went out with my torch to see if I could locate the source. It seemed to come from about 200 metres away, towards the ridge. The sound stopped as soon as I went outside. This has happened every time I've tried to investigate.

My partner thinks I'm hearing things. My neighbour suggested it might be foxes but I've heard foxes and this is completely different. Not wind (too structured), not animals (wrong pattern). I'm wondering if anyone else in the area has heard this or if there's a rational explanation I'm missing.

Foxes make some seriously weird sounds actually. Screaming, chattering, all sorts of noise. And if there's a group of them, it can sound almost coordinated. The Moors are also quite acoustically strange - sound carries weird there, can get amplified or distorted.

Your neighbour might be right about the foxes. But also - and I mean this kindly - have you had your hearing checked recently? Tinnitus and other hearing conditions can create patterns and rhythms our brains interpret as meaningful sound.

Could be a community event or gathering in the area? Pagan groups, music festivals, that sort of thing? Hebden Bridge has a bit of a New Age community. Might be worth asking around locally.

This is actually the most sensible suggestion. Rural areas near Hebden Bridge definitely have people doing seasonal rituals, outdoor gatherings, that sort of thing. Worth checking with local forums or Facebook groups first.

If you hear it again, try recording it on your phone even if you can't identify the source. Audio evidence is better than description. But genuinely, the Moors are strange places - lots of acoustic phenomena that's perfectly natural but sounds eerie.
