Witnessed something unusual last night and thought I should report it properly. I was driving back from Liskeard toward Bodmin around 11:15 PM when I noticed two distinct orange-red lights hovering over the moor about a mile to my left (north-west direction). Clear sky, minimal clouds, good visibility.

The lights were stationary for approximately 2 minutes, then one shot upward - and I mean properly shot - faster than any conventional aircraft. The second light dimmed and vanished. The whole thing lasted maybe 3-4 minutes total. No sound whatsoever.

I've filed a report with your local MUFON equivalent (if you have one?), but I'm curious if anyone else saw this. The colour was distinctly orange-red, almost the colour of sodium street lamps but way too high and too far out. Definitely not a helicopter or drone.

There was activity reported over Bodmin about a month ago. Did you get any video? The detail about the acceleration is crucial - that rules out most conventional explanations. What was your distance estimate?

Chinese lanterns mate. Gets reported every time someone sees orange lights. Probably a farmer two miles away burning something.

No way that's lanterns. The acceleration the OP described isn't compatible with that. I've seen Chinese lanterns and this sounds completely different. Bodmin's got a history of sightings going back decades. This fits the pattern.

Unfortunately I didn't get video - my phone was plugged in. Kicking myself now. Distance estimate... probably 3-4 miles away? Hard to judge at night. They were definitely above the moor though, not in the clouds.
