Stonehenge builders - ancient aliens or just Neolithic flexing?

Look, I get why people think aliens built Stonehenge. Moving massive stones without modern equipment seems impossible, right? But the evidence actually points to Neolithic people being considerably more clever than we give them credit for. They had leverage, organisation, and literally decades to get it right.

The "ancient aliens" explanation always feels like people saying "non-white people couldn't possibly be smart enough to do this" with extra steps. Which is a bit dodgy if you ask me. But I'm genuinely interested in what people think - am I being too dismissive of the alternative theories?

You're not being dismissive enough, honestly. The "aliens must have done it" argument is basically Victorian anthropology in fancy dress. Neolithic engineering was genuinely sophisticated - they were doing complex maths, understanding seasonal astronomy, organising massive labour forces. We've got archaeological evidence for all of this. The fact it looks impressive to us 5,000 years later doesn't mean it was impossible for them.

But have you actually tried moving a stone that weighs 25 tonnes with ropes and wooden sledges? Because I haven't and I'm not convinced the standard explanation really holds up under scrutiny. There's definitely something we don't understand about how they did it. Doesn't automatically mean aliens, but the confidence in the "Neolithic people just worked really hard" explanation feels false to me.

This is the thing though - the people who built Stonehenge were European so that particular argument doesn't apply. I think it's more about underestimating how much human ingenuity and obsessive effort can accomplish. They probably had scaffolding we don't have evidence for anymore.

I visited Stonehenge last month and honestly the precision of the alignments is what gets me. It's not just heavy rocks - it's heavy rocks positioned with incredible accuracy relative to celestial bodies. That requires seriously advanced knowledge. Not saying aliens, but something doesn't add up with the "they just worked really hard" narrative.

Has anyone actually read the peer-reviewed archaeology on this? Because there's decades of research showing how Neolithic communities organised labour, transported materials, and constructed monumental architecture. It's genuinely fascinating without needing to invoke aliens. English Heritage have some good resources on it.
