Something woke me up on the Yorkshire moors last month and I still don't know what it was

This happened about five weeks ago (early November) on the moors near Hebden Bridge. I was staying in a mate's cottage for a walking weekend - just me, him, and his partner. The cottage sits quite isolated, maybe 2km from the nearest village. Weather was clear that night, cold but not freezing.

Around 2:47 AM (I checked my phone), I just woke up. Not gradually - suddenly, completely alert. I was absolutely freezing, even though we had the heating on and good duvets. The dog, which had been curled up at the foot of the bed, was huddled in the corner of the room, shaking. I could hear something outside, but I can't describe it properly. It wasn't a normal animal sound. Sort of like... a repeated clicking or ticking noise, very rhythmic, moving around the cottage perimeter. It lasted maybe three minutes then stopped completely.

My mate came in saying the dog had woken him too. His partner didn't hear anything but she's a heavy sleeper. I went back to sleep about 20 minutes later but felt uneasy the rest of the night. When we went outside the next morning, there was absolutely nothing - no tracks, no damage, nothing odd at all. The dog was nervous for the rest of the weekend though, which is unusual for her.

I've been trying to work out what it could've been. Foxes? Some kind of bird? Local wildlife experts aren't helpful. Just wanted to document it somewhere.

This is the bit that gets me every time I read something like this. That sudden waking with no apparent trigger. I've experienced it myself three times, always accompanied by unexplained animal distress. Did you feel any tingling or unusual sensations in your body before/during the waking? Sometimes there's a correlation with electromagnetic activity.

Hebden Bridge area's got a lot of history with strange occurrences actually. There's documented sightings going back centuries. The clicking sound is interesting - not typical for any animal I know. Did it have a rhythm or pattern you could describe? Like morse code, or more random?

Honestly mate, could've been a barn owl mixed with some wind and your brain doing the rest. Not trying to dismiss your experience, but moors play tricks on you at night. The sudden waking is usually just sleep cycles. That said, the dog reaction is harder to explain away. Did you check if there were any meteor activity that night? Sometimes people report strange sounds during meteor showers.

This is worth documenting properly. Get the exact coordinates of the cottage if possible, note the date again, and try to contact locals about any recent unusual occurrences. You should also report it on MUFON's UK database - they collate this stuff. The clicking noise in particular suggests something worth investigating further.

Have you been back? Sometimes if something's genuinely strange, returning to the location can yield more evidence. Just be safe about it obviously.
