Silent sessions - do they actually work, or is it just tedious?

I've been hearing a lot about "silent sessions" lately - where ghost hunting groups go into a location, turn off all equipment and just sit in silence for extended periods, waiting for manifestations or spirit communication. The theory is that energy-hungry spirits need electrical equipment as an energy source, so removing that somehow helps communication or activity.

It sounds a bit dodgy to me, if I'm honest. But I'm wondering if there's something to it that I'm missing. Is it just a way to heighten your awareness and suggestibility, or is there actual evidence that spirits respond better to silence?

Has anyone done proper silent sessions? Did you get any results? And more did the results seem attributable to the silence itself or to just spending more time in a location and being more attentive?

I've done them and honestly, some of the most interesting activity I've experienced has been during silent sessions. Whether that's because spirits prefer it or because you're just more aware of subtle things when there's no electronic interference, I couldn't say. But results-wise, they're worth trying.

This is basically meditation in a haunted building and then confirming every tiny sound is a ghost. I'm not saying nothing happens, but the lack of external stimuli makes your brain fill in gaps. It's a well-known psychological thing.

The theory about spirits needing electrical energy is kind of bollocks, to be fair. But silent sessions can still be useful because you hear things you'd otherwise miss - footsteps, moving objects, knocks, whatever. Whether a spirit's causing them or it's just the building settling is another question.

I reckon they work because when you're sitting in silence in the dark, your senses are heightened and you pick up on things. That doesn't mean it's not genuine paranormal activity, just that the silence creates better conditions for perception. Try it and see what you think.

We do silent sessions at most of our investigations and they're usually the most productive periods. Whether that's placebo or actual paranormal response, I genuinely don't know. But they're definitely worth including in your toolkit.
