I'm looking to get an EMF (electromagnetic field) meter for basic ghost hunting but I don't want to spend more than £50. There's loads of options on Amazon and eBay but I can't tell which ones are actually useful vs. which ones are just gimmicky toys that register every electrical socket in a building.

Has anyone used any of these cheaper models and actually got reliable readings? I'm specifically interested in:

• Meterk GM3120 (around £25)
• Gauss Master (around £35)
• The Tenmars TM-192 (around £45)

Would love to hear real-world experiences rather than just the Amazon reviews which are usually rubbish.

I've used the Meterk GM3120 for about two years now and it's genuinely solid for the price. It gives consistent readings, the sensitivity settings are useful, and it's built tough enough to take on investigations. Only downside is the display is a bit small if you're older or have eyesight issues. For £25 though, you can't complain.

The Gauss Master is basically a Meterk with a slightly different housing. I'd save the tenner and go for the Meterk. Both will pick up EMF spikes but both are also sensitive enough to frustrate you in a modern house full of appliances. That's not a flaw though - it's just physics.

I've tried all three and honestly they're all roughly equivalent. The Tenmars is slightly better built but the extra £15-20 isn't worth it unless you're planning heavy fieldwork. If you're doing occasional investigations, the Meterk is perfectly adequate. Just remember: baseline readings first, always.

None of these will give you 'proof' of ghosts if that's what you're hoping for. EMF meters detect electromagnetic fields, which are everywhere in modern environments. What you're looking for is anomalous spikes in locations that should be EMF-dead. That requires skill and methodology more than expensive kit.

Honestly? Save a bit more and get the K-II meter instead (around £60-70 when they're in stock). It's specifically designed for paranormal work, has better sensitivity calibration, and less false positives than generic EMF meters. The cheaper ones work but they're frustrating to use.

I use the Meterk and it works fine, but I also use it in conjunction with a thermal camera and audio equipment. EMF by itself tells you very little. Just wanted to flag that before you spend money thinking a meter alone will help you ghost hunt.
