Right, I've been a lurker here for ages but this has properly shaken me up. Last Saturday (15th March, around 11:30pm) I was driving back from my mate's place near Castleton with my girlfriend. We were on the A6187, pitch black, no other cars about. Suddenly our headlights caught something crossing the road about 200 metres ahead.

It was huge. Like, genuinely huge. Taller than our car, broad shoulders, moved on all fours but kind of... loped? The fur or whatever it was caught our lights and looked reddish-brown. It crossed in maybe three or four strides and disappeared into the moorland on the other side. The whole thing lasted maybe 15 seconds.

My girlfriend said nothing for a solid minute, then asked if I'd seen that too. We drove past slowly but obviously it was gone. We didn't get a photo (wish we had) because honestly we were both too shocked. Not a deer, not a horse, definitely not a bear. The gait was all wrong for any of those. Has anyone else had sightings in the Peak District area? I'm not mad, I promise.

Cheers for sharing mate. The Peak District has quite a history of these reports actually. There was that 2009 incident near Buxton that got decent coverage in the local press. Question though: could it have been a Eurasian lynx or something that's gone feral? There's definitely a theory that some big cats escaped from private collections in the 80s and 90s and have been breeding quietly.

Have you filed a report with the local wildlife trust? Even if they're skeptical, it goes on record. Plus if others have seen the same thing they might connect the dots. The reddish-brown colouration is interesting because most big cat sightings around the Midlands are black or tawny.

Sorry but this is getting a bit ridiculous isn't it? A quadruped taller than a car would be like 2 metres at the shoulder minimum. We'd have photographs everywhere, dead bodies, etc. Are you sure you weren't just tired from driving? The A6187 is proper dark and your brain can play tricks on you at night.

Absolutely brilliant report, honestly. The level of detail you've provided (location, time, direction of travel, behaviour) is exactly what we need. Don't mind the skeptics - they're the reason we have standards on this forum. If you're up for it, would you consider driving that route again during daylight and taking some photos of the terrain? Might help others with their own investigations in the area.

Red-brown fur, four-legged gait, size... have you looked into reports of the British Big Cat? There's loads of them documented in the Pennines over the last 30 years. The theory goes they're either escapee pumas or, well, something unidentified that's adapted to the moors. Fascinating stuff.
