Saw something hovering over the treeline behind my house last night and I can't stop thinking about it

Mate that feeling of not being able to stop thinking about it is massive. That's usually the first sign its not just a mundane explanation your brain is trying to dismiss it.

What colour was the light? And when you say hovering - was it completely silent or was there any sound at all? Those two details make a huge difference in terms of what we might be looking at.

I had something similar over the fields near Woodbridge about three years back, just sat there totally static for maybe ten minutes then gone in under a second. No gradual acceleration, just gone. Still bugs me.

Post any photos or video if you have them but even if you don't, write everything down now before the details start fading. Seriously do it tonight.

@scrappy_seeker is right, the colour matters a lot here. White/yellow usually boring, orange or deep red gets interesting, blue-white strobing is something else entirely. Seen a few over the years round here in the northwest and the ones that stick with you are always the ones that move wrong - not like a plane, not like a drone, just... wrong. Describe the movement if you can, hovering then shooting off is very different from slow drift.
