Right so this kind of thing is exactly what gets me. A few questions before I try and work out what you might have seen - was it completely silent or did it make any noise at all? That's usually the first thing I try to pin down because drones have a very distinct buzz and a lot of people don't realise how far that sound carries at night.
Also how long did it hover for? There's a big difference between something that holds a fixed position for like 30 seconds and something that just sits there for several minutes with no drift. The latter is what really rules out most conventional explanations for me.
I'm based in Edinburgh and we get a decent amount of weird aerial stuff reported up here, mostly dismissed as military or weather balloons but some of it genuinely doesn't fit those categories. Would love to hear more detail on the shape if you could make one out against the treeline.
