Saw something hovering over the tree line behind my house last night and I can't explain it

Interesting report - a few things stand out to me straight away.

The ". Hovering". Behaviour is the detail I'd want to interrogate first. Drones are everywhere these days but sustained hovering over a tree line at night, with no audible rotors, doesn't fit the typical DJI profile most people would recognise. Military hardware is a different matter, but that's rare over residential Derbyshire, so I'd probably rule that out unless you're near an MOD corridor.

A few questions that would genuinely help narrow this down:

Duration - how long did it hold position before moving or disappearing?, Light configuration - single point of light, multiple, pulsing, or steady?, Sound - complete silence, or any low hum/frequency you felt more than heard?, Weather conditions - was there any low cloud or mist that might have caused internal reflection from ground lighting?

I'm fairly new to properly documenting this sort of thing myself - only recently started keeping a proper observation log after reading too many cases where witness recall degrades fast. Even rough sketches within 24 hours are worth doing.

If you have a phone video, even shaky and dark footage is worth posting. The community here is pretty good at identifying mundane explanations when they exist, which actually makes the genuinely unexplained cases stand out more clearly.

What direction were you facing roughly? That context matters more than people realise.

Sustained hovering is just a DJI Phantom with a nervous operator mate, I've ". Investigated". Weirder things that turned out to be a Tesco bag caught in a thermal.
