Few questions worth working through:
Altitude estimate - could you judge roughly how high above the field it was sitting? Treetop level vs. 200ft+ changes the analysis considerably, Light characteristics - static or pulsing? Single colour or shifting? Any structured shape visible around the light source itself?, Duration - how long did you observe it before it moved or disappeared?

Nothing as dramatic as what you're describing, but I've learned that the movement pattern when it eventually leaves is often the most telling detail. Instantaneous disappearance versus directional departure are very different phenomena.
