Right, I know this is ancient history by paranormal standards, but my dad finally decided to tell me what he saw near Rendlesham in December 1980. He was working at the RAF base doing contract work and absolutely refuses to talk about it publicly, but he's given me permission to post anonymously here.

According to him, there were definitely "multiple objects" in the forest over three nights, not just the one sighting everyone knows about. He saw what he describes as a "floating lantern thing" moving between the trees on the 27th around 11 PM. Says the air smelled like burnt plastic and ozone. Several blokes he knew were told to keep quiet by their commanding officers.

I've tried to get more details but he clams up. Does anyone here have family connections to RAF Woodbridge or Bentwaters? Would be interested to hear if similar stories have been passed down through families.

Your dad's smelling burnt plastic and ozone is fascinating because that matches witness statements from the original 1980 reports. There's a book called 'Left at East Gate' that goes into incredible detail if you haven't read it. Might jog some memories if you casually leave it lying about.

Mate, I hate to be that person but "family stories" are basically the paranormal equivalent of hearing something down the pub. Not saying your dad's lying, but 45 years is a long time and memories get dodgy. Has he got any documentation? Sketches? Dates written down at the time?

This is brilliant intel. The "floating lantern" description keeps coming up in the primary sources but gets glossed over in documentaries. The official explanation was a lighthouse beam + falling satellite debris, but that doesn't account for the triangulated sightings or the ground disturbances. Would your dad ever consider doing a recorded statement?

Three nights is huge though. The official record only really highlights the first night. If there were sustained sightings, that changes the narrative completely. Military would've been even more desperate to cover it up.

The burnt plastic smell is intriguing but also could be genuine ordnance testing - RAF bases weren't exactly environmentally friendly in the 80s. There was a lot of weapons development happening out there. Not saying it wasn't aliens, just saying don't discount mundane explanations first.
