Recurring nightmares or genuine abduction memories? How do I tell the difference?

I'm sorry if this gets asked constantly but I'm genuinely confused and a bit frightened. For the last eight months I've been having dreams where I'm being examined by "something" - I can't quite see the faces but there's a presence and a sense of paralysis. I wake up and my sheets are soaked through.

The weird part is that these dreams always happen on the same nights - there's no pattern I can identify, but they feel absolutely real in a way normal dreams don't. My girlfriend says I sometimes murmur things in my sleep that don't make sense. Last week I woke up with what looked like a small puncture mark on my foot, but I can't remember getting it.

I'm not looking for validation necessarily - I want to know how other people in this community distinguish between nightmare trauma and actual abduction experience. Are there reliable indicators? Has anyone been through something similar?

Right, so this could be sleep paralysis combined with hypnagogic hallucinations, which is incredibly common and feels absolutely real. The puncture mark is more interesting though - if it appeared overnight with no explanation, that's worth investigating. Have you been to a GP? They might have an explanation or at least rule out infection.

Night sweats combined with paralysis and nightmares can sometimes indicate sleep apnoea or anxiety disorder. Genuinely worth getting checked by a sleep specialist before jumping to abduction conclusions. The medical route might reveal something useful either way.

The recurring nature on specific nights is unusual - that's not typical of regular nightmares. Have you noted what date/lunar phase these happen? Some people report abduction activity correlating with specific celestial events. Also worth checking if there's electromagnetic interference in your bedroom - high voltage lines, mobile mast nearby, smart meters. That can trigger these experiences.

I've worked with several people who've gone through this. The key differentiator is: can you remember details that you couldn't possibly know? Sophisticated technology, information about galactic politics, mathematical sequences? Or is it just vague impressions? The specificity tends to separate genuine recall from anxiety dreams.

This really does warrant professional investigation. There's a proper hypnotherapist based in Manchester who specialises in recovered abduction memories. I'll find the details if you want. But also genuinely get the sleep apnoea ruled out - my mate had similar symptoms and it was just that. Either way, you'll have answers.

The puncture mark is the only concrete thing here. Take a photo of it and monitor for any strange characteristics - unusual scars, marking that moves, unexplained bruising. Keep a detailed sleep log for the next month. Most importantly: stop assuming anything yet. Gather data first, theorise later. That's the scientific approach.
