This is probably nothing, but I found what might be a large primate footprint whilst hiking near Malham in the Yorkshire Dales last weekend. I've attached a photo below (or tried to - apologies if it hasn't uploaded properly, my phone's playing up).

The print is massive - easily 15 inches long - and it was in soft mud near Malham Tarn. The shape is distinctly hand-like with five digits, and the depth suggests real weight behind it. Now, I know Britain doesn't have wild primates, but we do have reports going back decades of something large moving through remote moorland areas. I'm not saying it's Bigfoot - that's American - but could we have something similar here?

Has anyone got experience identifying primate prints? Or heard reports from hikers in the Dales? I'm going back next month to look for more evidence.

It's almost certainly a badger or wolverine print (if you've got an escaped exotic pet nearby). Badger prints can look surprisingly hand-like when they're in mud, and the claws can create a spread that looks larger than it is. If you've got the photo, post it up and we can all have a look - that'll settle it pretty quickly. But I'd need to see it before jumping to Pennine ape conclusions.

There's actually a decent history of "English wildman" sightings in the Peak District and the Pennines going back centuries. Nothing as credible as Pacific Northwest Bigfoot reports, but enough anecdotal stuff that you can't completely dismiss it. If you find more prints, take measurements, get casts if you can, and document the location precisely. That's proper evidence gathering.

No. We have very regular foot traffic through the Pennines. Thousands of hikers every month. If there was a large unknown primate living in the Dales, we'd have photos and solid evidence by now. The print is almost certainly bear-like (badger, fox, dog) or a boot print you're misinterpreting. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Don't listen to the skeptics - weird things do exist in wild areas. I had a strange encounter near Pen-y-ghent about ten years ago. Something large moved across the moorland about 100 metres from me. Definitely bipedal, definitely not a deer. Couldn't see it clearly enough to describe properly. Never seen anything like it since, but it's out there. Please upload that photo - genuinely curious.
