This is probably going to sound absolutely mad but I genuinely need to know if what's happening is something we need professional help for, or if we're just losing our minds collectively.

For about three weeks, small objects have been moving in our house. Sheffield, semi-detached, nothing fancy. Started with things going missing - keys, my kid's school uniform stuff, that sort of thing. Annoying but explicable. Then about ten days ago we actually started seeing things move. Like properly move. A pen on the kitchen counter slid about a foot across the surface with no one touching it. My wife swears she saw it happen. Our teenage daughter was in the room. I didn't see it but I'm willing to believe them.

Since then it's been worse - cups falling off shelves when they shouldn't, things relocated entirely (a book from the lounge appeared in the attic, doors locked from the inside were open, that sort of thing). The atmosphere in the house is weird. Everyone's on edge. We're snapping at each other. Our youngest is having nightmares.

I don't know what we're dealing with here. I don't believe in ghosts, but I also can't explain what's happening. Has anyone else experienced something similar? What actually helped? Do we need an actual investigation or should we just call an exorcist or something?

Before you do anything paranormal, rule out the obvious: subsidence, drafts, the house settling, loose shelving, animals (seriously, a rat or bird in the walls can cause chaos), and structural issues causing vibrations. Get a surveyor in if necessary. Most poltergeist cases that get investigated properly have a mundane physical explanation.

The family stress element is actually significant - and I don't mean that dismissively. Genuine poltergeist activity (and I think it's rare) seems to cluster around emotional disturbance, particularly adolescents. Your teenage daughter's presence in these incidents might be relevant. Not saying she's faking it or moving things herself, but there's an energy thing that sometimes happens during puberty / emotional turmoil. Is there anything going on with her specifically?

Get a medium or investigator in if you want, but honestly? First step is talking to your GP. What you're describing - the family tension, everyone on edge, stress cascading through the house - is creating an environment where everyone's hyper-alert to unusual stuff. You see movement where there might be none. You interpret normal settling sounds as paranormal. It becomes self-reinforcing.

Did you see this yourself or only hear about it? This matters. If you've only got second-hand reports, you need to be observing yourself before you assume something paranormal. Set up a camera, watch the kitchen for a week. Most of the time there's a boring explanation once you actually watch instead of just hearing about incidents.

Poltergeist activity is genuinely distressing - I'm not saying you're making it up - but it usually requires a professional investigation before you know how to proceed. Contact your local paranormal investigation group. They'll come out, document things properly, rule out environmental factors, and advise whether you've got an actual issue or whether you need a surveyor and a family therapist instead. Both are valid answers.

The nightmare in your youngest is a big red flag. Whether this is paranormal or psychological stress, that kid's scared and that matters. Get the house checked professionally (surveyor) and also consider whether your family needs some support - counselling or mediation. Sometimes problems get blamed on ghosts when they're actually about family dynamics. Both need addressing separately.
