Hi Quirk Reports! Just joined because I'm honestly confused and my friends all think I'm being ridiculous. I'm a fairly rational person - I work as a pharmacist, I read a lot of science - but yesterday something happened that I can't explain and it's been doing my head in.

I was at home in my London flat (Brixton), midday around 1pm on the 18th of November, and my lights started flickering. Like, all of them at once, throughout the flat. No wind, no electrical issue (I checked all the obvious stuff). It lasted about two minutes and then stopped. Completely normal since.

But here's the weird bit - during those two minutes, I heard a sound like a very low frequency humming. Almost felt it in my chest more than heard it. And my cat absolutely hated it - she was yowling and trying to hide. After it stopped she was fine.

My landlord says the electrics are fine. No one else in the building reported anything. I'm not trying to suggest something paranormal happened, but I genuinely don't have a rational explanation. Is this something anyone's experienced?

Welcome! That actually sounds like it could be subharmonic frequency - infrasound. It's basically sound below the normal hearing range but you feel it physically. There's legit science about it: infrasound can cause unease, nausea, that sensation of presence, and animals react badly to it.

The question is what caused it. Sometimes power lines generate infrasound, sometimes it's geological (underground water movement, tectonic micro-shifts). In London specifically, there's the Underground - could vibrations have travelled through the pipes or structure? Though simultaneous lights flickering is unusual.

This is interesting because there were several reports from south London around that date of electrical anomalies. I remember reading about it in the local community groups. Could be coincidental infrastructure issues, or could be something else. Did you notice any other weird stuff in your area that day?

The animal reaction is significant. Cats are much more sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies than humans. If your cat was distressed, that suggests legitimate EM disturbance, not just your imagination.

Have you checked with the power company about any work happening near your building? Sometimes they do maintenance that affects the grid. Or if your flat's near a hospital, they have heavy electrical equipment that can cause interference.

This might not be paranormal exactly, but it's definitely anomalous and worth documenting. Keep a log if it happens again - times, duration, any other effects. Might help narrow down what it is.
