Hi everyone! I'm James, from Leicestershire, and I've only just discovered this forum yesterday. I'm not sure where to post this properly yet, so figured the new members section was safest.

Right, so on Halloween night (October 31st), something happened at my flat that's kept me up half the nights since then. I live in an old Victorian conversion, and around midnight I heard footsteps in the hallway outside my door. Clear, deliberate footsteps. My flat mate was out, the building was supposed to be empty, and when I opened the door: nothing. But the footsteps got louder for a few seconds after I opened it, like whatever was making them moved further down the hallway.

I know Halloween's probably not the best time to mention anything spooky without sounding like I'm being dramatic, but this genuinely unsettled me. Has anyone got experience with period buildings in the Midlands?

Welcome! Halloween timing is unfortunate but doesn't make it less real. Old Victorian buildings settle and make all sorts of noises - pipes, floorboards, expansion and contraction. But the fact that you heard it progress down the hallway suggests something more than just building creaks. Could still be a neighbour, could be something else. Have you asked other residents if they've experienced anything unusual?

Footsteps in old buildings are actually pretty common reports. Victorian conversions often have strange acoustic properties - sound can travel in weird ways through the walls and floorboards, so something from outside or even from inside the walls can sound like it's in the hallway. That said, it's understandably spooky when it happens. Stick around and file a proper report in the Sightings section if you want - good to have it documented.

I'd suggest checking for physical explanations first - settling pipes, neighbour, rodents, etc. But if you keep experiencing things, keep a log. Document date, time, what you heard, weather, that sort of thing. Over time you might see a pattern that points toward either a mundane explanation or something worth investigating further. And definitely check the building's history - sometimes knowing what happened there helps context.

That's the creepy bit, isn't it? Not just the sound, but the way it responded to you opening the door. Did it sound like whatever was there was aware of your presence? That's worth documenting. Might be nothing, might be something. Either way, welcome aboard.

Victorian conversions in the Midlands often have a fair bit of history. If you've got a moment, try finding out when your building was constructed and what it was originally used for. That context can be surprisingly helpful. I'm from Derby originally - these old places have character and sometimes actual resident spirits! Check out the 'Personal Encounters' section and post the full story there too.
