I went in expecting the standard paranormal doc format - spooky music, dramatic music swells, talking heads saying vague things - and I was pleasantly surprised. "Shadows Over Scotland" (4 episodes, dropped last Tuesday) is produced by the folks who did that solid BBC Scottish history series, and it shows.
Each episode focuses on a different region and investigates specific hauntings with actual historical research backing it up. The Scottish Highlands episode is the standout - they interview academics, genealogists, and local historians alongside paranormal investigators. It's refreshing that they're not pretending to have definitive answers. The vibe is more "here's what happened, here's what people reported, make up your own mind."
Only critique: it's a bit slow-paced for people wanting jump scares or dramatic confrontations. But if you like your paranormal content thoughtful and historically grounded, I'd genuinely recommend it. Better than most of the reality TV rubbish that gets greenlit. Obviously it's included with your Netflix subscription.
