My nan's flat in Whitley Bay—something's been there for decades

My nan passed away six months ago, and my family's still sorting out her flat. She lived there for 42 years, lovely place, sea views, proper cosy. But there's something in the spare bedroom that's been making its presence known for as long as I can remember.

I used to stay over as a kid and I absolutely hated that room. Never slept well, always felt watched, cold spot by the wardrobe even in summer. Nan always dismissed it as "just old pipes" but I reckon she felt it too because she never used that room and the door was usually closed. When I was going through her belongings I found a diary entry from 1989 where she mentions feeling "an unexplained presence" in the spare room.

Now here's the mad bit: my cousin was staying there last month before the estate sale, and she reported the exact same thing. Didn't know about the diary entry. Said the room was freezing cold and she could "sense" something in there. She lasted one night and insisted on sleeping in the lounge.

My mum thinks I'm mad for even considering paranormal explanation, but the consistency of the reports is eerie. Has anyone else experienced generational hauntings like this?

Generational hauntings are definitely a thing - though the explanation might be psychological rather than paranormal. If your nan was nervous about that room, she might've unconsciously communicated that anxiety to you as a kid. Kids pick up on parental/grandparental nervousness like radar. Your cousin might be picking up the same vibe from family conversations.

Have you considered getting the room investigated properly? There might be a mundane explanation - rising damp, mold, underground water source, electromagnetic fields from nearby power lines - any of which could cause that uncanny feeling. Get it checked out medically before you assume it's paranormal.

This is actually your strongest evidence. Consistent, independent reports without prior knowledge. That's compelling. I'd suggest keeping a log if you go back to the flat. Temperature readings, time of day, what you felt exactly, any sounds or visual phenomena. Data over gut feeling.

Whitley Bay's got a lot of history - the old mining industry, shipwrecks in the bay during storms. Could be residual energy from something traumatic that happened in the area? Not necessarily tied to the building itself but to the land. Worth researching what was on that spot before the flats were built.

Honestly mate, sorry about your nan but the coldness could literally just be insulation issues or that room gets less sunlight. As for the diary and your cousin's experience - selective memory and suggestion are powerful things. You notice the cold spot because you're expecting to notice something. Your cousin's nervous because your family's been discussing it.

If you still have access to the flat before it sells, you could do a simple experiment. Get temperature readings throughout the day with a proper thermometer, not just intuition. Check for damp or structural issues. Document everything with photos and dates. Scientific approach might reveal something ordinary, or it might reveal something worth investigating further.
