Lake monsters—Nessie and beyond

So I've been reading some older Quirk Reports threads about lake cryptids and I'm struck by how little things have changed since the 1970s. We've got better sonar, better cameras, better everything - and yet we have FEWER credible sightings of Nessie.

I don't think that's evidence she doesn't exist. I think it's evidence that whatever Nessie is, it's adapted. Or maybe the whole thing was never real in the first place and we've been chasing a cultural myth.

What I really want to know: are there any lakes that haven't been thoroughly investigated? Somewhere in Scotland or the Highlands where something could actually be hiding?

The number of people on Loch Ness at any given moment is absolutely bonkers now. Tourists with drones, wildlife photographers, the lot. If Nessie existed before all that, she's either dead or smart enough to hide better. Neither scenario helps us find her.

Loch Morar has been criminally under-investigated. The Morag sightings are actually more consistent than Nessie's, but it's smaller and more remote so fewer people go there. That's where I'd start if I had funding.

Everyone's obsessed with the big spectacular cryptids, but what about smaller anomalies? Fish that don't match any catalogued species? Unusual migration patterns? We're so focused on monsters we miss actual unknowns.

The sonar argument is rubbish though - Lake Superior has excellent sonar coverage and nobody's claiming monsters there. The lack of evidence in well-studied areas suggests there's nothing to find.

I went to Loch Ness last year as a skeptic. Spent three days there. The water is absolutely filthy - you can't see more than a few feet down even with torches. Finding anything in that is basically impossible unless it surfaces. Which is why the photo evidence from the 30s and 40s actually matters more than any modern investigation.
