I'm asking because my mate is too embarrassed. He was driving the A591 near Ambleside on September 8th, just after 5pm (dusk-ish). He saw what he describes as a "massive black humanoid shape" cross the road about 50 metres ahead. Not a bear, he's adamant. He said it moved bipedally, very long arms, covered in dark fur.

By the time he'd processed what he'd seen, it was already off the verge and into the trees. Happened in maybe 3 seconds. He didn't hit it, didn't get photos, didn't stop (understandably). He's been going mad ever since wondering if he hallucinated it or if something actually crossed that road.

Has anyone else seen anything in the Lake District recently? I know we're more of a "Bigfoot in North America" forum generally, but Britain's got forests too. Would be good to know if there's any pattern of sightings in that area.

A591 is a main road - pretty populated. If something that size actually crossed there, other people would've seen it. Did your mate check if anyone reported an accident or unusual wildlife sighting to the police that day? Local news might've covered it.

Dusk is the classic cryptid sighting time. Light's weird, your eyes are tired from driving, brain fills in gaps. BUT - Lake District's got wolves in the past, deer are huge there, could've been a large stag running? Still doesn't account for "humanoid" though. The arm length is the detail that's hardest to explain.

massive black humanoid shape
This is either the most significant Sasquatch sighting in the UK this decade, or a misidentification. I'm leaning toward the second because A591 gets thousands of cars daily and if there was actually a 7-foot-tall bipedal creature there, someone would've got photos. But I'm not saying your mate's lying - just that perception in traffic is weird.

Get your mate to file a formal sighting report with the BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization). They take UK sightings seriously. Even without photos, documented eyewitness testimony builds a pattern over time. And honestly, sometimes just knowing other people have seen similar things makes people feel less mad.
