Kitchen cupboards opening on their own - every single night

Right, I'm at my wit's end here. For the past three weeks, the cupboards above my cooker have been opening themselves. Not like, slowly creaking open either - I mean fully swinging open as if someone's given them a proper yank. It's always between 2 and 4 AM, and it's loud enough to wake me up.

I've checked the hinges, the handles, everything. New house, built in 1987, semi-detached in Lancashire. No drafts, no loose hinges, no dodgy catches. My wife thinks I'm mad, but she's heard it twice now and even she looked a bit unsettled. Last night I set up my old mobile to record video on the kitchen side, and I've got nothing - just 6 hours of an empty kitchen.

Has anyone else experienced cupboards doing this? Or am I just being paranoid and there's some dead simple explanation I'm missing?

Check your boiler mate. Seriously. I had this exact thing happen in my flat in Manchester, drove me mental for weeks. Turned out the heating system was creating a pressure difference in the walls which was somehow affecting the latch mechanism. Once the boiler was serviced, stopped overnight.

Could be expansion/contraction of the wood if you've recently had central heating worked on or the weather's changed dramatically? My mum's 1990s kitchen does this every autumn when the temperature drops. Not paranormal, just annoying physics.

Nope, this is textbook poltergeist activity if I've ever seen it. The fact that it's happening on a schedule (2-4 AM) suggests a presence with a routine. Try leaving something as an offering - sounds mad but genuinely worked for my mate in Salford. Some kind of spirit activity feeds on attention and disturbance.

Blimey, are we seriously recommending bribing ghosts now? Next we'll be telling him to leave out a cup of tea. It's almost certainly one of: dodgy hinges, pressure differential, or the OP's subconscious doing it whilst sleepwalking.

Have you got pets? Cats especially love jumping up and messing with cupboards at night. My tabby used to do exactly this and I was convinced my house was haunted. Felt like a right muppet when I realised it was just her.
