Kitchen cupboards opening by themselves - starting to get worried

So this has been happening for about 8 weeks now in my flat in Hackney. Started off occasionally - would come downstairs in the morning and one cupboard door would be open. Thought it was just me being forgetful, or maybe dodgy hinges. But it's escalated.

Now it happens multiple times a day, and sometimes when I'm actually in the kitchen. Last week I watched the cupboard under the sink just slowly swing open while I was making a cup of tea. There's definitely no draft - I've checked for windows rattling, air vents, structural movement, the lot. The hinges are new actually, fitted just before this started.

Has anyone got experience dealing with this? I'm not sure if I'm being haunted or if there's a rational explanation I'm missing. The flat's about 40 years old, nothing particularly spooky about it that I know of. Should I get a priest in or something ridiculous like that?

Before you call a priest, have you checked if there's a mouse or rat in there? Poltergeist activity can often be explained by rodents moving things about, or just bumping into cupboard doors. Get some traps down, see if you catch anything. If the activity stops after you've dealt with the pest problem, mystery solved. If not, then you can start thinking about the paranormal stuff.

Poltergeist activity in Hackney is fairly common actually - the area has a lot of restless energy from the industrial past and bomb damage during WWII. The fact that it started recently suggests something might have been disturbed. Have you done any renovations or moved furniture around? Sometimes that can trigger activity if there's a presence already in the property.

Not ridiculous at all. Depending on your faith, a blessing might help. But honestly, I'd start with getting the flat checked out properly - damp surveys, structural engineers, the full works. If everything comes back normal and it keeps happening, then explore the paranormal angle. Rule out the boring stuff first.

Could be subsidence or movement in the building structure causing the doors to pop open when the wood shifts. Hackney's got some old Victorian terraces with dodgy foundations. Get a surveyor round, cost you about £150-200 for a basic inspection. If the cupboards genuinely open on their own with no explanation after that, then we're talking about something else.

Get some video footage. Set your phone up overnight pointing at the cupboards. You won't believe how useful that is for investigation. If you've got genuine paranormal activity, it'll show up on camera. If it's something mundane, you'll see what's causing it. Either way you'll have answers.
