Right, I've finally got round to reading Nick Pope's book about the Rendlesham Forest incident, and honestly? It's bloody brilliant. The way he lays out the timeline and the official responses is proper eye-opening. Cost me £14.99 from Waterstones but worth every penny.

What gets me is how the MoD's explanations kept shifting. One week it's a meteor, next week it's lighthouse reflections. Come on, lads. I wasn't there in 1980 but the contradictions are wild.

Has anyone else read it? Keen to know if I'm buying into nonsense or if this actually holds water. Also wondering if there's a decent podcast series on this I should add to my commute rotation.

Mate, Pope's got credibility because he was actually IN the MoD. Not some YouTube conspiracy theorist. That said, the book does lean heavily on witness testimony and there's always the possibility of mass delusion or misidentification. But yeah, the lighthouse explanation is pants.

The 'In Search Of Podcast' did a three-parter on Rendlesham that's free on Spotify. They interview some of the actual military personnel. Fair warning though: one of the hosts is annoyingly skeptical and keeps saying 'probably just swamp gas' even though Rendlesham isn't exactly marshy. Annoying but worth listening to.

Reading Pope's stuff is fine but don't sleep on the declassified documents themselves. You can actually get them online now. Some of the MoD memos are hilarious - they're clearly confused and covering their arses. That's more interesting than any interpretation, IMO.

I read it five years ago and honestly found it a bit dry in places? Pope's thorough but it's not exactly a page-turner. The bit about the local press coverage was good though. Anyway, if you want a proper rabbit hole, look up the 'Halt Memorandum'. Actual photocopied docs from the incident commander. Mental.
