Hi everyone, I'm Claire and I'm completely new to this whole paranormal investigation thing. I found Quirk Reports through a Google search and the community seems really welcoming and knowledgeable, which is brilliant because I genuinely have no idea where to start.

A few months ago (November) I had an experience in my flat in Manchester that I can't quite explain, and it's kind of got under my skin. Nothing dramatic - doors opening on their own, hearing footsteps when I'm alone, that sort of thing. My mates all think I'm being ridiculous, but it's genuinely been unsettling.

I'm interested in learning more about this stuff, but I don't want to be 'that person' who jumps to paranormal explanations for everything. I want to understand the rational side of things too - like, how do you tell the difference between a genuine haunting and just... normal house noises or whatever?

Any advice for a complete beginner would be amazing. Thanks for being patient with me!

Welcome Claire! You've come to the right place. The best approach as a beginner is genuine curiosity without jumping to conclusions. Your instinct to understand both rational and paranormal explanations is exactly right. Start by reading some introductory material - there are some brilliant threads in the 'Guides' section. Most importantly: keep a detailed log of everything that happens. Date, time, what was happening beforehand, any witnesses, everything. After a few weeks of data you'll start to see patterns.

Opening doors and footsteps are often just normal house settling or vibration from upstairs neighbours (if you're in a flat block). Not trying to be dismissive, but those are the first things to rule out before getting excited about paranormal activity. Are you on the ground floor or upper floors? What's the building like - old Victorian terraces or modern construction? That context helps a lot.

Don't let the skeptics discourage you. Your experiences are valid and the fact that you're approaching this thoughtfully rather than jumping to wild conclusions shows good critical thinking. Manchester has a surprisingly active paranormal scene actually - there are some decent investigative groups operating in the area. Would be worth making some local connections before investing heavily in equipment. Welcome aboard!

Great intro post! Happy to have you in the community. My advice: lurk in the Personal Encounters forum for a bit before posting your experience - read how established members describe their encounters and gather vocabulary for what you've noticed. Then post a detailed description of what's been happening. The community's very good at helping people differentiate between rational explanations and genuine anomalies. Looking forward to hearing more about your situation!
