Something like this happened to me about three years back, living out here in rural West Virginia. My two hounds absolutely would not cross the threshold of the back door, just sat there whimpering and staring up at the treeline. Never heard anything on the roof but the general atmosphere was wrong, if that makes sense. Like the air pressure had changed or something.
The thing that gets me about your situation is the roof element. Animals react to infrasound frequencies that humans cant pick up and some researchers in the abduction field have documented cases where the initial contact event is preceded by animals refusing to go outdoors. I'd be very curious whether you noticed any lost time that night, even just 20 or 30 minutes you cant account for.
What part of the country are you in? Rural or suburban? That context matters a lot. Would be good to hear from others who've had similar animal behaviour before a larger incident.
