That footstep pattern matters a lot here. Was it two-legged or four? Dogs going that crazy is always worth paying attention to, they pick up on things we just can't.
Had something similar years back out in the hills near Morgantown. My old hound wouldn't stop barking at the treeline for about two hours straight, hackles up the whole time. Never did figure out what it was but the next morning there were odd marks in the mud near the porch.
Did you go outside and check, or wait til morning? And what county are you in if you dont mind saying. West Virginia has some genuinely weird stuff moving around at night and it helps to know the area. Some of the accounts I've read from this state alone could fill a book honestly.
