Right so this got my attention straight away because dogs dont lie. That staring at the ceiling thing is the detail that really matters here - animals pick up on things we just can't register. My old lurcher Bess used to do exactly that in the weeks before I started finding flattened circles in the barley field behind my house back in 2008. Just locked onto a spot and wouldn't move.
The roof sounds are interesting too. People always assume an animal but I'd want to know the rhythm of the footsteps, were they regular? Distributed evenly like something walking on two legs or more of a scrambling sound?
Had a similar experience years ago, three nights running, and what struck me was the absolute silence that came just before it. No owls, nothing. Like everything in the area just went quiet.
Would love to hear more detail if you can remember it. What time did it start and was there anything unusual in the days leading up to it?
