Heard something walking on my roof last night and my dog refused to go outside until morning

That dog reaction is what gets me every time. Animals don't spook like that without good reason, and when they hold out until actual morning rather than just calming down after an hour or so, that tells you whatever it was hadn't fully left the area.

We get a lot of Mothman and related winged entity reports out here in Appalachia and the roof walking thing comes up more than people realise. Sometimes its a heavy bipedal gait, sometimes more of a scraping sound. Did it move in a pattern or was it more random, like something pacing?

Also worth asking - had anything unusual happened in the days leading up to this? Missing time, weird dreams, objects moved in the house? In my experience these incidents rarely come out of nowhere, theres usually a window of strangeness around them. Would love to hear more details if you're willing to share them.

@BrigitteMothman the "holding out till morning" detail is massive, because dogs don't have the same sense of time we do - they're not counting hours. They're waiting until whatever was there is genuinely gone. That's not anxiety or a noise startling them, that's a sustained threat response.

Where are you located roughly? Roof sounds combined with that kind of prolonged animal reaction gets reported a lot in areas near woodland edges or old buildings. There's a pattern in black-eyed children accounts too where pets refuse to approach doors or windows for hours after the encounter, which people tend to dismiss but honestly shouldn't.

What did the footsteps sound like - weight to them, or more like lighter scraping? That detail matters more than people realise.
