Seen this comparison floating around and it's too accurate. You've got these blokes turning up in their fancy equipment, thermal imaging cameras, EMF meters, the lot. They're building it up like they're about to encounter the entity from Poltergeist.

What they actually find: a loose loft hatch, mice, dodgy electrics, and one time someone's cat which had been missing for six months. The 'paranormal activity' is just old houses doing old house things.

Not having a go at genuine researchers, but the TV versions are comedy gold. Anyone got examples of hilariously mundane explanations for 'hauntings' they've encountered or read about?

My favourite is the haunted pub in Yorkshire that turned out to be a gas leak. People were feeling 'presences' and having weird dreams because they were literally inhaling carbon monoxide. Once they got the boiler fixed, all the activity stopped. Paranormal Investigation: 0, Basic Home Maintenance: 1

The one that gets me is when they blame everything on 'intelligent spirits' communicating through the electrics. Nope, mate, that's just your meter box struggling because the house was built in 1832 and you're running five smart devices off one extension lead.

There was a 'haunted' cottage down in Dorset that everyone was convinced had poltergeist activity. Doors slamming, objects moving. Turned out to be subsidence. The whole bloody house was shifting slightly in the wind. Gave everyone motion sickness being in there, which they interpreted as spiritual presence. 😅

To be fair though, sometimes the real explanation IS interesting. I read about a 'haunted' hospital ward where people kept seeing shadows and feeling dread. Turned out to be infrasound from traffic outside - frequencies below human hearing that make you feel uneasy. That's genuinely fascinating, even if it's not ghosts.
