Has anyone been following the ongoing FOIA requests related to Rendlesham Forest? I know there's been a lot of movement on this over the past few years, with various documents being released or partially declassified. I'm trying to piece together what's actually been revealed versus what's still under wraps.

From what I can gather, the initial incident in 1980 is now somewhat public, but there are supposedly still classified files relating to subsequent investigations and military response protocols. Does anyone have links to the officially released documents or know the status of current requests?

I'm also curious whether any UK government officials have ever officially commented on the incident rather than through media leaks. The US military clearly knew something. I'm wondering if the UK side ever produced anything similar.

The declassified stuff is mostly available through the UK National Archives now - you can access scanned copies of the official reports. They're not exactly thrilling reading (lot of bureaucratic language), but the raw data is there. As for ongoing classified material, who knows? FOIA requests move like treacle. I'd suggest checking the National Archives website directly rather than relying on secondary sources.

The UK government's official position has basically been 'nothing to see here.' No official statement that's particularly helpful. The Americans have been slightly more forthcoming, which is interesting in itself. Makes you wonder what the UK's hiding, doesn't it?

I did an FOIA request myself about a year ago and got a partial release with some good redactions. Took about six months. If you're genuinely interested, submit a request directly to the Ministry of Defence. Be specific about what you're asking for - vague requests get shut down fast. It's tedious but sometimes worthwhile.

The problem with UK disclosure is we're never going to get the same openness as the US seems to be moving toward. Different political culture, different security frameworks. Rendlesham will probably stay semi-mysterious forever. Which is frustrating but also kind of fitting for a British mystery, innit?
