Hi everyone. I'm not usually one to post online about this stuff, but I went to that Skinwalker Ranch exhibit in Nevada (the simulation one, I'm not mad) and genuinely had an experience I can't explain. It was probably just clever theming and my brain playing tricks, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had similar experiences with "immersive paranormal" attractions.

I felt genuinely unsettled in a way that didn't feel like normal fear of the haunted house variety - it was more like a presence? I know that sounds ridiculous written out. Anyway, I'm curious about Skinwalker Ranch itself and whether the reports there are worth taking seriously, or whether I've just been primed to expect weirdness and my brain delivered. Cheers in advance for not making me feel completely barmy.

ModeratorJohn: Welcome! You're not barmy at all - immersive experiences can trigger genuine psychological states, which is interesting in itself. Whether that's paranormal or just clever design is the question. The real Skinwalker Ranch is a whole other thing - look up Robert Bigelow and the NIDS investigation. Genuinely strange phenomena reported, but also a private property with a lot of hype and commercialization around it now.

DesertWatcher: The ranch is real and the phenomena are documented by serious researchers, not just conspiracy types. Whether it's paranormal or interdimensional or just weird natural phenomena, something unusual goes on there. The simulation is probably playing on the actual reports, so your unsettled feeling might be picking up on genuine weirdness that was researched for it.

Doesn't sound ridiculous at all. Immersive environments can trigger limbic responses that feel "present" even when you rationally know you're looking at props and effects. Your nervous system doesn't care about the explanation. Whether that indicates paranormal activity or just clever design is genuinely hard to distinguish in the moment. Both explanations fit the experience.
