Encountered something on the London Underground at 2am - still unsettled

I'm posting this anonymously because I work for TfL and I really can't have this traced back to me, but I need to talk about this somewhere and Quirk Reports seems like the only place that won't immediately dismiss me as mad.

This happened about three weeks ago, late October. I was working the night shift on the Northern Line, doing routine station checks around 2am at Tottenham Court Road. The station was completely empty - middle of the night, no trains for another hour, just me and my torch doing the regular patrol.

I was on the northbound platform checking for debris when I noticed the tunnel was... odd. Not visibly different, but there was this weird atmosphere. Static-y feeling, if that makes sense. The air felt thick. My torch beam was doing something strange - it wouldn't quite illuminate the tunnel properly. Like the light was being absorbed instead of reflecting off the tracks.

Then I saw something move in the darkness beyond where the light reached. A shape. Tall, too tall to be a person. Definitely bipedal, but the proportions were wrong. The head was too large or the body was too thin or something. I absolutely bottled it and walked back to the station office. By the time I worked up the courage to go back out, it was gone. The atmosphere cleared up. Everything normal again.

I didn't report it because obviously nobody would believe me and I'd probably lose my job. But I've been spooked ever since. Does this fit any known phenomena? Has anyone else had encounters on the Tube?

The London Underground is genuinely creepy. It's old, it has weird geometry, there are tunnels that go nowhere... But beyond the architecture, there are definitely reports of unusual activity down there. I've heard stories from multiple Tube staff about things that don't quite fit normal explanations. You're not alone in this.

This is interesting. Could be electromagnetic interference affecting the torch electronics, or it could be something weirder. The Tube has massive electrical systems running through it. But your description of the beam being absorbed suggests something else. That's not typical EM interference behavior. That's something active, maybe? Deflecting light?

There's a whole history of strange stuff on the Tube. The abandoned stations are obviously haunted, but activity on active lines is less well documented. Probably because staff don't talk about it for the exact reason you mentioned - job security. Would be interesting to know if other night shift workers have experienced similar things at Tottenham Court Road.

Could've been a hallucination? Sleep deprivation on night shifts can cause weird sensory experiences. Not saying you made it up - just worth considering. Fatigue, loneliness, the strange environment, all combine to create conditions where misinterpretation is likely. Have you slept okay since?

The description of proportions being wrong, with an oversized head, sounds like it could fit certain cryptid descriptions (humanoid with odd proportions). There are reports of encounters like this in unusual places. The Tube's deep underground, isolated, unusual acoustic properties... might attract something. Or you might've just seen something genuinely unexplainable. Either way, stay safe down there.
