EMF meters - which ones actually work? (budget under £50)

Right, I've been ghost hunting as a hobby for about 18 months now and I've spent a fortune on equipment that's either broken or utterly useless. I want to invest in an EMF meter because they seem like the most 'scientific' tool, but I'm not about to drop £200 on professional-grade kit.

Has anyone had good experiences with budget EMF meters? I've looked at the K-II meter (about £35 on Amazon), but there's a million reviews saying they're just picking up phone signals and Wi-Fi interference. Is that a legitimate concern or just skeptics being dismissive?

Also, should I be looking for different features? Some have audio alerts, some have visual lights, some do both. What actually matters when you're trying to detect genuine paranormal activity versus just environmental EMF?

Honest answer: most budget EMF meters don't distinguish between ambient electromagnetic fields and actual anomalies. A K-II will go mental near your laptop, phone charger, or microwave. That said, if you establish a baseline reading when you arrive at a location, then note any significant spikes, you can at least document unusual activity. Just don't expect it to be definitive proof of anything.

I use a TriField meter clone (about £45 from eBay) and it's decent enough for hobby work. The key is learning to understand what you're actually measuring. Go to different locations and take baseline readings first. A shop will read different to a church will read different to an old hospital. Once you know the patterns, anomalies stand out better.

Skip the meter entirely and get a digital thermometer instead. Temperature drops are more reliable indicators of paranormal activity than EMF in my experience. You can get a good one for £20. EMF meters are basically security blankets that make you feel professional but don't actually tell you much. Though they are fun at parties.

This is why I hate this forum sometimes. OP's asking for legitimate equipment advice and you lot descend into pseudo-scientific hand-wringing. A meter is a tool. Use it properly and you'll get data. Don't and you'll get noise. Simple. The K-II is fine for beginners. Buy it and learn from experience.

If you're serious about this, the GhostPro app for phone is actually pretty solid and it's free. It measures EMF through your phone's sensors. Not perfect, but for £0 it's a good starting point before investing in hardware. Then graduate to a proper meter once you understand what you're looking for.
