Did the Egyptians actually have contact with the Olmecs? The similarities are driving me crazy

Right so this has been rattling around in my head for a while and I want to hear what people actually think rather than just the standard "coincidence" brush-off.

The pyramid structures are the obvious one but what gets me more is the depictions of boats. Both cultures have remarkably similar reed boat designs and the ocean was supposedly this insurmountable barrier. Was it though? Thor Heyerdahl proved you could cross the Atlantic on a reed vessel decades ago so why does the academic consensus still treat transoceanic contact like a fringe idea.

The colossal Olmec heads is another thing entirely - some of those facial features have been debated for years and nobody wants to touch it seriously.

Has anyone looked into the cocaine and tobacco traces found in Egyptian mummies? Because thats the bit that genuinely keeps me up at night. Those plants were supposedly New World only. You cant just explain that away with contamination forever.

What angle are people most convinced by here, or is anyone actually sceptical of the whole thing?
