I'm planning a paranormal road trip around Essex and Borley Rectory is obviously on the list. But I've been reading mixed reviews - some people say there's nothing to see because it's just a field now, others swear they've had experiences even without the building.

The land's private I think? So you can't actually access it properly. Is it worth the drive from London or should I focus on other Essex haunts that are actually accessible?

Also, anyone been recently? What's the vibe actually like, or is it just glorified ghost tourism at this point? I'm genuinely interested in the history and any lingering phenomena, not just ticking boxes for Instagram photos.

It's a field with a gate. You can see the location from the road but can't get close. Honestly? Save your petrol. The historical significance is interesting but there's nothing to actually experience there now. Better to visit Pendle Hill or Pendle Village if you're up that way - more accessible and better documented activity.

Disagree slightly. I went last year and yeah, there's nothing physical to see, but the location itself is atmospheric. The energy or whatever you want to call it is noticeable. Might be psychological but standing at the boundary where the rectory stood does something to people. Worth the visit if you're passing through Essex anyway.

The real Borley experience is reading the historical accounts and court documents. Harry Price's investigation was fascinating (and also highly disputed). The physical location now is mostly relevant for pilgrimage purposes. If you're interested in the actual paranormal investigation, focus on the documentation instead.

If you're doing an Essex paranormal tour, do Pendle, Borley, and then head to Colchester - loads of Roman and medieval hauntings documented there. Much more bang for your buck than just Borley alone.
