Borley Rectory: worth visiting or complete waste of time?

I'm planning a paranormal tourism day in Essex next month and Borley Rectory is obviously on the list. However, I want to know if it's genuinely interesting or if it's just a field with a plaque now.

I've read about the hauntings from the 1930s onwards - the famous "séance incident," the ghostly footsteps, the apparitions. But I also know that a lot of the documentation comes from Harry Price, who apparently had a reputation for... let's call it "dramatic interpretation."

So: is the location still active with paranormal phenomena, or is it more of a historical curiosity? Any members been recently? Is it worth the petrol?

I visited in 2019 and honestly? Nothing happened. It's a field. There's a memorial, some foundations visible, and that's it. The original rectory burned down in 1939 so you're not even in the same building where the phenomena allegedly occurred. Worth a quick stop if you're in the area but don't make it your main event.

The Harry Price thing is crucial - he was genuinely a paranormal investigator but he was also Victorian and prone to confirmation bias. A lot of the Borley stories got embellished over retellings. That said, the location supposedly does have residual energy even now. Bring dowsing rods or a decent EMF meter if you want to do proper investigation.

At this point it's definitely more historical than active. The phenomena seemed to peak in the 1930s-40s and have mostly ceased. Might be worth visiting for the history alone if you're into British paranormal lore, but I wouldn't expect an encounter. The story's more interesting than the location now.

There are much better Essex locations honestly. Pendle Hill's more active if you want genuine reported phenomena. Or if you're in that area anyway, the old plague pits near Chelmsford have much more recent activity. Borley's the flagship name but it's probably the least active of the famous UK haunts at this point.

I did a sensitivity scan there two years ago and picked up some residual electromagnetic disturbance around the memorial area, but that could be modern infrastructure. The land itself might be slightly unusual but the house-specific phenomena are definitely gone. If you're already doing an Essex trip, sure. Don't detour specially.
