So Borley Rectory is obviously one of the most famous allegedly haunted locations in Britain, and I've always wanted to visit. The original rectory burned down in 1939, but I understand there's still stuff to see in the village and the foundations are apparently still accessible?

I'm planning a trip to Essex in a few weeks and thought this would be a good excuse to make the pilgrimage. But before I go, I want to know:

- Is the site actually visitable or is it private property now? - What can you actually see/experience there in 2024? - Any good local pubs or accommodations nearby? - Is there anything worth doing while you're in the area? - Any local history museums or archives with Borley stuff?

I know a lot of the original Borley hysteria was probably embellished by Harry Price (the paranormal investigator), but there's definitely something interesting about the history there. Be keen to hear from anyone who's visited recently.

The site is privately owned now but there's public footpaths through the area. You can see where the rectory stood - there's remnants of foundations and old brickwork. The churchyard is publicly accessible. Worth visiting for the historical interest, though don't expect to feel haunted or anything. It's more interesting as an archaeology of belief, if that makes sense.

Long Melford nearby is lovely and has good pubs and restaurants. The Crown is decent for a decent pint and meal. There's also loads of medieval architecture around there which is worth seeing. Lavenham's about twenty minutes away too and it's gorgeous - loads of history.

Understatement of the century. Price basically invented half the phenomena to make the case more interesting for his books. The whole thing's a brilliant case study in how beliefs compound and get reinforced over time. Still worth visiting for historical reasons, but manage your expectations.

I visited in 2022 and honestly found the whole thing a bit melancholic. The area's nice but the actual site is just a field now. The church (St Andrew's) is worth seeing though - older and more atmospheric than the rectory remains. If you're doing a paranormal trip, honestly check out Pendle Hill or Tintagel instead. More atmosphere and better documented history.

The University of Essex has some Borley archives if you're interested in the historical research side. Worth emailing ahead if you want access. And yeah, read Robert Hall's analysis of Price's methods before you go - it'll give you proper context for what you're looking at.
