Borley Rectory is the obvious Essex haunted location, but I'm doing a project on regional hauntings and I want to go beyond the famous ones. Are there any lesser-known genuinely haunted sites in Essex that serious paranormal researchers have documented?

I'm based in Colchester and willing to do day trips, but I want places with actual history of hauntings, not just internet rumours.

Colchester Castle has some decent activity reported in the dungeons, though you'll need special permission to investigate. But if you want something more accessible, there's St. John the Baptist Church in Wethersfield - multiple reports of a grey lady, footsteps, doors opening. Very well-documented by local historians.

Pennyroyal Green near Loughton has an old manor house with a reputation for poltergeist activity. It's private property now so you can't get in, but locals have stories going back decades. Might be worth interviewing residents if you're doing proper research.

Check out High House Farm in Henham - genuinely haunted according to multiple paranormal teams who've investigated. The reports are consistent which is always a good sign. You might need to contact the current owners, but I believe they're somewhat open to researchers now.

Dedham Vale has some brilliant haunting stories, though they're scattered across multiple locations rather than concentrated in one place. The whole area has that atmosphere though. Worth exploring if you've got a weekend to yourself.
