Had a mate recommend me a new paranormal podcast and it was absolutely dreadful - more interested in sensationalism than actual investigation. Got me thinking: what are the actually good paranormal documentaries and podcasts out there? The ones that don't just scream at you or pretend everything is definitely aliens/ghosts/cryptids?

I'm looking for content that's genuinely curious, uses decent methodology, and respects the listener's intelligence. Doesn't matter whether it leans skeptical or believer - just want it to be thoughtful. Bonus points if it's British or features UK locations.

What are your go-to's? I'll start: I quite like Our Fake History (it's not paranormal-focused but the critical analysis is excellent) and Blore's Eye View for local UK locations. But I'm keen for recommendations!

If you want actually rigorous paranormal content, try The Cabinet of Curiosities podcast with Mike Dash. He researches historical paranormal reports with proper archival methods and genuine intellectual humility. It's not sensational but it's brilliant. Also Our Monsters, Ourselves on BBC Sounds explores the psychology of why we believe weird stuff - more analytical than spooky.

For British cryptid content, there's a YouTube channel called British Bigfoot Research that's surprisingly good. Bloke is a proper researcher, not just spinning stories. He genuinely engages with skeptics too, which is refreshing. As for documentaries, the old In Search of... Robert Stack episodes are genuinely atmospheric, even if they're dated.

Most paranormal content is rubbish, let's be honest. They're all trying to prove something rather than investigate it. My recommendation: skip the podcasts and read actual academic papers on parapsychology. There's more rigour in a single journal article than in twenty hours of 'paranormal investigation' entertainment.

Bit harsh, but fair. Mysteries of the Museum is decent though - focuses on odd artefacts and historical claims without assuming everything's supernatural. Also Stuff You Should Know episodes on paranormal topics are pretty balanced. The hosts are skeptics but not dismissive.

If you've got access to BBC iPlayer, search for some of the older paranormal documentaries from the 90s and early 2000s. They're less polished but actually more thoughtful than modern content. Less editing hysteria, more genuine curiosity. Some proper environmental horror vibes too, which is underrated.
