I'm getting into ghost hunting properly for the first time, and I want to invest in some decent kit without breaking the bank. Everyone raves about the professional-grade EMF metres (Mel 8704, etc.), but those are £200+. Is there a decent budget alternative that won't give me complete garbage readings?

I've got a decent digital thermometer and a voice recorder already, so I'm mainly after an EMF detector. I'm planning to do some residential investigations around Yorkshire with a mate, nothing too serious to start. Cheers in advance!

The Trifield 100XE is your sweet spot at about £40-45 online. It's not a professional meter by any stretch, but it's reliable enough for baseline readings and won't give you false positives from every nearby plug socket. I've used one for three years and it's survived being dropped, left in damp conditions, the lot.

Honestly, for under £50, you're in the realm of gimmicky tourist-shop gear. That said, if you're just starting out, even a gimmicky metre gets you thinking about electromagnetic fields properly. Just don't expect pinpoint accuracy. Get the Trifield if you can stretch to it.

Fair play, Yorkshire has some brilliant haunted locations. If you're near Pendle Hill way, that whole region is paranormal hotbed. For your kit: the budget metres are fine for ruling in/out obvious sources (dodgy electrics, etc.), which is actually more useful than people think. 50% of 'hauntings' are just dodgy wiring.

SLS camera might be a better investment than EMF for ghost hunting, honestly. You get visual data which is harder to dismiss. Just my two pence though - proper ghost hunters use everything.
