Beast of Bodmin - still happening? Recent sightings?

So I'm planning a road trip to Cornwall next month and I'm obviously going to spend at least a day snooping around Bodmin Moor, because who wouldn't? I've read most of the historical stuff about the Beast - the 1980s sightings, the livestock killings, the whole media circus - but I'm curious if anything's been reported recently.

Is this one of those cryptids that's gone quiet, or is there still activity being reported? And is anyone actually investigating it seriously anymore, or has the whole thing become a tourist attraction?

Also, practical question: are there any areas of the moor that are genuinely dangerous to wander around solo with basic kit, or is that more paranoia than reality?

The Beast was basically a media invention that fed on a few sheep kills and eyewitness reports that could have been anything. Big cat escapes happen - people dump exotic pets - but whether it was a big cat, a feral dog, or just wildlife misidentification is impossible to say at this point. Activity died down in the '90s and hasn't seriously resurged since.

Bodmin Moor is genuinely rough terrain in places and it gets dangerous in bad weather - boggy patches that'll suck you down, sudden weather changes, poor visibility. Less about the Beast and more about actual environmental hazards. Go during daylight, bring a proper map, and you'll be fine. The sheep farmers might give you odd looks if you're obviously hunting for cryptids, but they're not hostile.

There have been scattered reports over the years but nothing as consistent as the 1980s activity. Last credible sighting I've seen documented was probably early 2000s? Hard to separate genuine reports from people who've just read the old stories and think every dog they see is the Beast. Wouldn't count on finding evidence of anything.

Some of the old livestock kills were analysed at the time and veterinary experts suggested they were consistent with feral dogs rather than big cats. But that's less exciting for tourism, so the Beast narrative stuck around. Go for the landscape and the history of the phenomenon, but don't expect to find evidence of an undocumented animal.

Worth checking with the Bodmin Moor Visitors Centre when you're there. They sometimes have updated reports or local knowledge that doesn't make it online. And honestly, part of the appeal of cryptozoology should be getting out in these places and appreciating why they generate folklore - the landscape itself is strange enough without needing an actual Beast.
